Is David Martinez Dead in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners?
David Martinez did, in fact, die in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Since the beginning of the story, his death has been long overdue. He died fighting Adam Smasher, one of Arasaka Corporation’s dogs, who blew his brains out. David had no direction in life after the death of his mother, Gloria. From being expelled from school to the mountains of debt his family has accumulated, David has become a social outcast. His life is turned upside down when he lodges a military-grade implant called Sandevista on his back. David discovered it in his mother’s possessions and attempted to sell it to Ripperdoc. Fortunately, Ripperdoc refused the deal, causing David to have it inserted in himself. With the Sandevista, David can travel from one location to another in record time. It turns out that time seems to stand still for others while David is on the move. He first tried it on Katsuo, a classmate who had broken his nose fighting David. Later, David met Lucy and discovered the truth about the Sandevista. Maine, the leader of the Edgerunner gang that Lucy has joined, originally purchased it. It turns out that Maine purchased it from David’s mother, who was not able to deliver it as agreed. Fortunately, Maine was gracious enough to allow David to join the group. Maine recognizes David’s potential after he proves himself worthy after the limo incident. Interestingly, Lucy has set her sights on David, not only as a coworker but also as a lover. Things got worse when Maine and Dorio were killed in the incident with Tanaka. Maine died due to cyber psychosis, while Dorio was killed in the crossfire. David inherited Maine’s first implants, while Lucy discovered something terrible that must be kept hidden to protect David.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Ending Explained
Faraday gave David a huge job offer. He intends for David and his Edgerunners to ambush an Arasaka convoy. However, it is merely a ruse to prepare David for his offering to the Arasaka Corporation, including the cyber skeleton implant. Faraday will earn his corporate position if his plans to offer Lucy’s data and David’s body to Arasaka become successful. True enough, when Militech Corporation suddenly appeared, David and the others were forced to flee on the mini-cargo holding the cyber skeleton implant. Faraday tricks David into installing the cyber skeleton on himself in order to escape the Militech Corporation by impersonating Lucy’s voice. Faraday wants David to use the implant to destroy everything in his path. After all, this is David’s only option if he wants to see another sunrise in his life. Despite Rebecca’s protests, David installed the cyber skeleton along with the last of Ripperdoc’s immunosuppressive medications. He is already battling cyber psychosis symptoms at this point. Worse, affixing the cyber skeleton to himself would only lead to one result: his inevitable demise. David successfully defeated some of Militech Corporation’s forces by using the cyber skeleton implant. When David realizes that Kiwi has betrayed them and Lucy is being held hostage by Faraday, he decides to fight in the most obvious location. Falco and Rebecca fought against the remaining Militech Corporation forces on their way to the Arasaka Tower. Falco is driving, and Rebecca is covering their tail. David tries to regroup while injecting immunosuppressants one after the other. In the high tower, David eventually manages to attack Faraday, who is already in the midst of a negotiation with the Arasaka Corporation. David successfully retrieves Lucy before killing Faraday. Unfortunately, Adam Smasher enters the picture, resulting in Rebecca’s death. With no immunosuppressants left, David fought Adam Smasher until the bitter end. Before he died, David was able to send Lucy and the injured Falco away. Towards the end, David dies at the hands of Adam Smasher. The only good thing that came out of this incident is that his sacrifice led to Lucy having a better life. With the money from the job, David was able to support Lucy’s dream of going to the moon.
